What does the 2024 Canadian Federal Budget actually mean for Canadian families?

My family had the opportunity to share our reaction to the 2024 Canadian Federal budget by the Liberals that was just announced yesterday.

We were chosen by CTV \National News and got to meet their lovely news crew including Andrew Johnson. Both were super professional and so friendly/accommodating to my little girls. We were pleasantly surprised.

If there’s one thing we can all relate to its being part of a Canadian family.

And yesterday’s budget, although it was supposedly geared towards millennials and young working professionals, was a let down.

In today’s economy where most families are moving out of city centres or the country all together, affordability measures were really lacking.

And in the midst of the CRA debt recovery crack down – I think most people are fed up with this government. It’s really unfortunate to say as I do love certain Liberal ideals, I’m not seeing the practicality of keeping them in office.

A lot of the measures they announced yesterday involved years of implementation – families and individuals needed changes yesterday.

Converting Canada Post or Armed force buildings to rental buildings may provide a small sense of relief but to who? How long will that take and who really benefits when no one will own that living space.

I’m sure some small businesses felt a bit of relief in the break in carbon tax but how will they manage to stay afloat when most Canadians are feeling the pinch and are cutting down most expenses already.

And the increase from 50% to 60% tax in capital gains will do nothing but make investment owners hang on to their investments (likely real estate).

Our family owns a condo and we’ve kept it with the hope of eventually using up that equity to buy a bigger home for our growing family. We are not profiting and barely breaking even but as renters ourselves we understand housing is a basic human need. If push came to shove we may have to sell it to afford living here in the area we’ve made our home.

 But for how long?

We have our family here, our circle of friends, our community and as a plumber and freelance marketer our clients are here. We would have to start over if we moved away.

But I have no hope of buying a detached home here and I fear for my kids future – especially with the lack of actual measures this federal budget failed to address.

So here we are, feeling stuck and just living the day to day.
