Money saving tips for moms with young children

In this economy it’s hard to think about saving money because the cost of most things are through the roof.  As a mom of two (almost three) in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada it can be difficult! The cost of gas, groceries, and even basic hygiene care can be astronomical.

But this post isn’t about doom and gloom. Here are some small ways to save money as a young family:

  1. Save on Groceries by Meal Planning

This is an aspect of family planning I’ve struggled with. Thinking about meals for my family in advance (like for the month) can help with saving money. Aside from saving gas on multiple grocery tips, buying in bulk can really save you money. Having prepared snacks and homemade treats will taste better too!

  1. Organize playdates and socials at public parks

We love having our friends and family over for playdates but typically what happens is we end up prepping for snacks and beverages to be hospitable. Note: most of our playdate friends always ask to bring something and or bring snacks for their own kids. But that doesn’t stop the Filipina in me from having prepared food.

Planning playdates at parks helps alleviate this social guilt of prepping food. It also eliminates cleanup!

  1. Walk everywhere

I know this option isn’t available for all but if you can walk there I suggest it. Save money on gas, and yes, the gas prices are high these days! Plan adventures closer to home to try and eliminate the use of your vehicle.

  1. Now that the weather is warming up – use those drying racks.

Avoid using your dryer too often (or any other appliance) to save on your utility bills. Sometimes it’s unavoidable but you should see a noticeable difference on your electricity bill at the end of the month – especially if your husband has a dirty job (my hubby is a plumber).

  1. Utilize those community groups on social media and even marketplace

Got your eye on something that’s nice to have but it’s beyond your current budget? If you don’t mind pre-loved items being part of the online social media community groups may result in savings for you.

Most items are gently used or clean and are typically within a decent distance to pickup. This way you’re helping a neighbour

  1. Those dollar store activities…

I love my shopping trips at the dollarstore. I go there to pick up multiple activities for different times but I can go overboard if I don’t have a plan in mind before stepping foot in the store. The thought of everything being $1.25-$2 takes over and I throw everything that looks like it would be cool to use into the cart. When I get to the counter what should have only been a $10 shop ends up being $40+. So my tip: have a list of activities you want to do with your kids that’s good for 1-2 weeks. Think of multiple use items that can be bought for multiple activities. Ie. Paints, paint brushes, and paper. Avoid one-time use supplies (as cute as they can be).

  1. Re-use & recycle

Sustainability practices of re-utilizing packaging isn’t just for environmental purposes. I’ll share some fun crafty activities from reusing fruit/egg/cereal containers in the coming months. To avoid the chaos that appears from accumulating reusable packaging make sure you have cupboard/closet space dedicated to clean packaging for crafts. This saves you from buying extra craft things at the dollar store!

Saving money for your family really varies by each family’s own priorities and needs. Aside from opting to buy less expensive products, there are savings to be had as a family if you can sit down and discuss what monthly expenses can be eliminated. Again, all dependent on your family and your situation.

But these are my first steps towards savings. And as the year unfolds there will hopefully be a decline in the rising cost of our standard of living.

How is your family managing the affordability crisis in Canada these days?
